The GAIN Member Meeting is an opportunity for all GAIN members to convene, network, discuss industry trends and hear from industry experts.

This meeting will be held at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. We ask that all members who plan to attend register using the "Members" button above.

Speaker Information

Keynote Speaker: Sharon L. Deem, DVM, PhD, DACZM, Director of the Saint Louis Zoo Institute for Conservation Medicine

Topic: "The ties that bind: Zoonoses in the 21st Century"

Dr. Deem's presentation will highlight the trans-disciplinary approaches of conservation medicine and One Health. The talk will focus primarily on the challenges that face the conservation of biodiversity and public health. Emphasis will be on zoonotic pathogens and disease issues associated with changing ecosystems and the expanding animal – human interface.

Dr. Deem is a wildlife veterinarian with a D.V.M. from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and a Ph.D. in Veterinary Sciences (Epidemiology) from the University of Florida. She also completed a residency in zoological and wildlife medicine at the University of Florida, becoming a diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine in 1998. Dr. Deem has conducted conservation and research projects in more than 20 countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas. Her interests in wildlife veterinary medicine focus on the spread of disease between humans, domestic animals, and wildlife and the health impact of environmental changes and human contact on wildlife populations. During her veterinary career, she has been fortunate to work as a zoo clinician, epidemiologist and wildlife veterinarian. Dr. Deem has worked for the University of Florida, Wildlife Conservation Society, Smithsonian National Zoo, and the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute. In 2011, Dr. Deem became the director of the newly launched Saint Louis Zoo Institute for Conservation Medicine. She is the author of more than 100 book chapters, scientific and popular articles, secretary of the American College of Zoological Medicine, and an associate editor for the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine.

A shuttle bus will take the members to the dinner on the 31st, leaving at 5:30 and returning at 9. The bus will also be available to take members to the Danforth Plant Science Center the morning of June 1, leaving at 7:15 a.m. Meet in the lobby of the hotel to catch the shuttle.
